Abstract

This study assessed the inhibitory effects of lamb placenta peptide powder (LPP) on melanin production in animal models and B16F10 cells. The LPP contained 277.7 mg/100 g of free amino acids, which was 1.4 times higher than that of lamb placenta powder. The LPP significantly inhibited tyrosinase activity, the protein expression of whitening-related factors (PKA, CREB, MITF, TRP-1, and TRP-2), and the nitric oxide (NO) and, cAMP levels in the back skin tissue of UVB-irradiation treated mice. In B16F10 cells, melanin is derived from 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine, with LPP significantly inhibiting tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis. In addition, the protein expression of whitening-related factors was reduced. Moreover, the NO and cAMP levels were significantly reduced and, the production of glutathione increased. In conclusion, this study confirmed that LPP is a potential functional food material that can effectively inhibits melanin production in the skin.
